Course Description

Overview

Early Childhood Education graduates are well placed to seek employment as professionals in early childhood settings. They will also have transferrable skills applicable to a variety of careers related
to working with children and families. This programme will be for you if you would like to become a
graduate practitioner in the early childhood sector or if you have an interest in working with children
and families. The programme focuses on young children’s education, development and cares from
conception to the age of 7 years. Students will have the opportunity to become confident, self-aware,
reflective graduates able to operate as professionals in multi-agency contexts. The programme content draws on international research and practice, including global perspectives of children, different early childhood curricula and established, as well as emerging, theory.

The Qualifications have developed the learner’s ability to:
• Seek employment as professionals in early childhood settings.
• Develop critical thinking and other transferable skills which can enhance their employability.
• Support learner’s knowledge and understanding in relation to the personal and professional skills required to work effectively in early childhood settings.

  • Entry Requirements
  • The qualification can be offered to Learners from age 18. The Learners need to ensure that they have
    sufficient capability at the right level to undertake the learning and assessment.

    English language requirements
    The Qualifications have been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that
    restrict access and progression:
    • IELTS minimum 5.0- 6.5 overall with no fail.
    • Minimum 3A Levels or equivalent qualification.
    • Pass 5 GCSE subjects

    We consider applicants:
    • Who have demonstrated some ability and possess Qualifications at Level 3, for example ‘A’ Levels or vocational awards.
    • Who have spent some time in an organisational role and wish to develop their careers further.
    • With professional experience looking to change careers through work-based learning.

  • Units & Assessment
  • • Personal and Professional Skills
    This module is designed to support your knowledge and understanding in relation to the personal and professional skills required to work effectively in early childhood settings. It will draw on your experience and learning across all Year 1 module and encourage you to explore and reflect on your own beliefs and values as well as your skills and attributes.

    • Early Childhood Development
    In this module, you will explore the development, education and care of babies and young children from a range of perspectives. Recent research, current issues and the use of observational skills will be highlighted. You will develop an awareness of the uniqueness of each child and family and will explore how to adapt the practice to meet individual needs.

    • Creativity and Learning
    This module takes an experiential learning approach and you will explore a range of creative activities. Through taking part in a range of arts and craft activities you will be able to reflect on your own feelings when given choices and to consider what they, in turn, could offer children.

    • Global Perspectives on Childhood
    This module uses the study of national and international contexts to enable you to examine key concepts affecting young children and their families around the world and in the UK. The module is inquiry-based and includes the development of a website to disseminate to early childhood professionals the knowledge created by small student research groups.

    • An Introduction to Interprofessional Education
    The module is designed to give students the opportunity to work in multi-professional groups in order to improve understanding of a range of professional roles and encourage co-operative learning and working. The rationale for and benefits of inter-professional working are explored.

    • Psychological Perspectives

    This module uses psychology to provide perspectives on different ways of understanding children and adults in early childhood settings. You will use psychological theory as a critical tool to examine young children’s learning, care and education.

  • Career Development
  • This course gives you the opportunity to start developing your career through professional work-based learning. You will be paid UK minimum wage for a 20hour a week placement for the duration of your course, and will also be awarded an accredited Level 6 professional qualification from a UK awarding body.

  • Progression
    • On completion of your studies, you may be given a full-time graduate opportunity by your employer
    • You may wish to further your studies by taking on an academic masters programme or a level 7 professional qualification
    • You may also wish to start your own business through our enterprise education programme
